Configuring and using the FRITZ!Box answering machine

The FRITZ!Box is equipped with five integrated answering machines. Each one of them can be enabled and configured individually.

Simply proceed as described below.

Note:Our documents generally refer to the latest version of the FRITZ!Box firmware.

1 Configuring a new answering machine

  1. Open the user interface of the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Click “Telephony” and then “Telephony Devices”.
  3. Click “Configure New Device”.
  4. Under “Integrated in the FRITZ!Box”, select “Answering machine” and click “Next”.
  5. Select the operating mode, greeting delay and recording length, enter a name for the answering machine, and click “Next”.
  6. Select the numbers for which the answering machine should accept calls.
  7. Click “Next” and then “Apply”.

2 Configuring individual settings

The following settings are available and can be changed at any time:

Send messages via e-mail

The answering machine can automatically forward new messages to one or more e-mail addresses:

  1. Open the user interface of the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Click “Telephony” and then “Telephony Devices”.
  3. Click the “Edit” button after the entry for an answering machine to call up its settings.
  4. Select the “Properties” tab.
  5. Activate the option “Send messages via e-mail”.
  6. Activate the option “Delete messages after they are sent from the answering machine” if you wish to have messages deleted once they are sent.
  7. Enter an e-mail address to which new message should be sent. If you wish to have messages sent to several e-mail addresses, enter the addresses separated by a comma.
    • In the next step, you may be asked to enter various e-mail account details. This information is required so that the FRITZ!Box can send new messages via e-mail if the Push Service has not yet been configured.Note:These e-mail account entries can be changed any time in the FRITZ!Box user interface under “System > Push Service”.
      1. “FRITZ!Box” is already entered as the “Name of sender”. You can keep this name or enter another one.
      2. In the “E-mail address” field, enter the e-mail address to be used to send the e-mails.
      3. Enter the SMTP server of your e-mail provider in the field “Name of SMTP server”. If the SMTP server does not use port 25 (default), also enter the port number separated by a colon. The name of the SMTP server and the port number can be obtained from your e-mail provider.Example:
        The name of the SMTP server is smtp.de.post.net and the SMTP server uses port 599. Enter the following: smtp.de.post.net:559
      4. If the SMTP server requires authentification, check “E-mail user name” and enter the user name.
      5. If the SMTP server requires a password, enter the password and confirm it in the following field.
  8. Save your settings with “OK”.

Saving messages on a USB storage device

  1. Open the user interface of the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Click “Telephony” and then “Telephony Devices”.
  3. Click the “Edit” button after the entry for an answering machine to call up its settings.
  4. Select the “Properties” tab.
  5. Enable the option “Use USB storage device to increase recording capacity”.Note:If the option is greyed out, either there is no USB storage device connected to the FRITZ!Box, or the USB Remote Connection have been activated for your USB storage device. It can be deactivated the user interface of the FRITZ!Box under “Home Network > USB Devices > USB Remote Connection”.
  6. Click “OK” to save the setting.

Enabling remote playback

  1. Open the user interface of the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Click “Telephony” and then “Telephony Devices”.
  3. Click the “Edit” button after the entry for an answering machine to call up its settings.
  4. Select the “Remote Playback” tab.
  5. Check the option “Enable remote playback”.
  6. Enter a four-digit PIN. The PIN may contain numerals from 0 through 9.
  7. Click “OK” to save the setting.

3 Using the answering machine (e.g. switching it on and off, playing back messages)

The internal answering machines of the FRITZ!Box can be easily operated using the voice menu. If an AVM cordless telephone is registered with the FRITZ!Box, you can also use the menu of this telephone to operate the answering machine.

The voice menu can be used to access all the functions of the integrated answering machines.

Using the menu of an AVM cordless telephone to operate answering machine

  1. Press the “Menu” key on the telephone.
  2. Select “Answering Machine” and then press “OK”.
  3. Press “OK” to listen to new messages.Note:You will now hear the messages recorded by all answering machines for the numbers that your telephone reacts to. In addition, the messages of the first answering machine are also played.
    • or
    • select the settings for an answering machine and press “OK”. Now you can switch the answering machine off or on (operating mode “With recording” or “Greeting only”) and change various settings.Note:You can always select the settings for the first answering machine. In addition, you can select the settings for all answering machines for the numbers that your telephone reacts to.

4 Operating the answering machine from another telephone line

Listening to new messages

  1. Call a telephone number that you assigned to the answering machine.
  2. Press the star key * while listening to the greeting.
  3. Enter the four-digit PIN for remote playback.
  4. Follow the instructions in the voice menu.

Switching on the answering machine

  1. Call a telephone number that you assigned to the answering machine.
  2. Let it ring until you are asked to enter the PIN for your answering machine.
  3. Enter the four-digit PIN and press the 3 key on your telephone.

Your answering machine is now switched on.
